Letters Page: 25 June 2024
Here is another article where we publish the best comments we’ve received.
Since the last Letters Page, we have published articles on ambling in the Derbyshire Dales, a walk from Reading to Pangbourne and what is the English Dream?
Dr Irene Lancaster loved reading Paul Bindweed’s article on ambling. She found it “Beautiful article. Very therapeutic.” Indeed, high praise.
Lauren Moir loved Paul’s essay and said, “Wonder-filled essay on the art of Ambling”. She learnt a new phrase too, “Arse-sliding, which is definitely NOT part of the Ambling code.”
Brother Alexander commented on Call of the Shield Maiden’s article on strolling from Reading. He said he “I thought I knew this area quite well, but I learnt some things in this article that I wasn’t aware of before. Well written.”
Lauren Moir said “What a country you are England, I pray that everyone lucky enough to live there appreciates and defends her. Keeps her history in loving arms and never, never forgets what a remarkable country she is.”
Finally, Brother Alexander wrote an article on the English Dream, as opposed to the American Dream. It seems to have struck a chord with the readership. With Mackenzie saying “This was beautiful 💫” and Lauren Moir (A hat-trick commentator) said, “A beautiful tale of England, the essence of which lays in its hills, dales and wonderful pockets of community. A lovely read.”
Nick mentioned how he too had the Haywain hanging in his parent’s lounge and it was the only painting in his house. He said, “It intrigued me then as is still does now.”
Edward said, “I enjoyed "The English Dream" very much. On the subject of dreams and of England I heartily recommend to your readers the novel Albion's Dream by Roger Norman. Although it is ostensibly for children it has much to offer to adult readers, and offers a sort of allegorical journey into the heart of England and the powers that lie there through the medium of a magical game which has been passed down through an old English family. I won't say more for fear of spoiling it.”
Thank you for all your kind comments. They are most appreciated.
